Tilapia fish is one of the most widely consumed fish in the world and certainly the most farmed because of its tolerance for growing in tight spaces and high reproductive ability.
This means that more fish can be raised per cubic meter of water than any other type of fish. This makes the tilapia very viable for farming.
Many people believe tilapia to be unhealthy for various reasons.
Some of them include beliefs that tilapia eats poop, can not expel its own waste, it causes Alzheimer’s disease, it should not be eaten etc., most of which of course are just myths.
So what Is the truth?
Tilapia is a healthy fish with so many health benefits. However, like any other food has its upsides and downsides, so does tilapia.
First off, Tilapia does not feed on poop, it is a herbivore that feeds primarily on algae and plankton.
Essentially, an animal is what you feed it. There is nothing genetically wrong about the fish that makes it unhealthy or unsafe for human consumption other than how it is raised, processed and subsequently handled.
So long as you are sure of the source of your tilapia, enjoy it in peace.
